The Best 4x4 Tracks Within 2 Hours of Brisbane (2026 Guide)

From Glass House Mountains fire trails to the Old Mill Road in D'Aguilar — the tracks worth your weekend, plus what gear you'll actually need.

Brisbane is one of the best 4x4 cities in Australia and most weekend warriors don't realise it. Within a two-hour drive you can be in proper hill-country fire trails, sand tracks, beach runs, and high-clearance rock work — without burning a tank of diesel just to get there. Here's the 2026 shortlist we send our customers home with after a fitment.

Quick answer

The five best beginner-to-intermediate 4x4 tracks within 2 hours of Brisbane in 2026 are Mt Mee & D'Aguilar fire trails, Glass House Mountains forestry roads, Landcruiser Mountain Park (Nanango), Bribie Island, and the Old Mill Road / Neurum Creek network. Permits and conditions change seasonally — always check QPWS and HQPlantations alerts before you leave Brisbane.

1. D'Aguilar & Mt Mee fire trails (45 min north)

The D'Aguilar Range is the closest "real" 4WDing to the Brisbane CBD. The fire-trail network running off Mt Mee Road gives you steep clay climbs that turn nasty after Brisbane's summer storms — perfect for shaking down a new lift or testing a recovery setup. Stay on gazetted trails only, and remember most of the National Park section is 2WD-only; the 4WD permitted areas are within the State Forest.

  • Best vehicle: stock Hilux/Ranger and up.
  • Tyres: 18 PSI on the clay sections after rain.
  • Recovery: bring straps and a partner — phone signal is patchy past Mt Mee village.

2. Glass House Mountains forestry (1 hr north)

Just past Beerburrum, the pine plantations open into hundreds of kilometres of HQPlantations roads. It's the friendliest "intro to touring" terrain near Brisbane: graded gravel, the odd rutted descent, and great photo backdrops with the volcanic plugs in the distance. You need a free recreation permit from HQPlantations before you go.

3. Landcruiser Mountain Park, Nanango (2 hr north-west)

Privately run, $35 day fee at the gate (2026), and over 100 km of graded tracks ranked from green to extreme black. This is where Brisbane locals go to actually use their lockers. The black tracks will eat panels — bring your rock sliders and a winch-rated bull bar.

4. Bribie Island (1 hr north)

The closest sand driving to Brisbane. A vehicle access permit (VAP) from QPWS is mandatory in 2026, tyres down to 18 PSI on the beach, and don't push the tides — the northern run past Poverty Creek bottlenecks fast. Great for first-time sand drivers and a brilliant overnighter with a swag.

5. Old Mill Road & Neurum Creek (1.5 hr north-west)

A favourite of the Offroad Animal workshop crew. Mixed gravel, creek crossings, and a few proper articulation tests. Camp at Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, run the loops on Saturday, hit the Woodford bakery on the way home Sunday. Bring an UHF — the convoy traffic on channel 10 is half the fun.

The kit that actually matters

For 90% of weekend tracks within 2 hours of Brisbane, you don't need a $40k build. You need:

  • Recovery points rated and bolted to chassis — not tow balls.
  • A quality bull bar for roo strikes on the Bruce or D'Aguilar Forest Drive.
  • All-terrain tyres at the right pressure for the surface.
  • A UHF radio on channel 10 (4WD convoys) and 40 (highway).
  • A real recovery kit — snatch strap, rated shackles, gloves, MaxTrax.
Most of the recoveries we hear about within an hour of Brisbane come down to the same thing — a stock vehicle, summer-storm clay, and no rated recovery points. Fix the recovery points first. Everything else is upgrades.

Permits, fees and rules in 2026

  1. QPWS Vehicle Access Permits (Bribie, Inskip, Moreton): book online via Parks Queensland.
  2. HQPlantations Recreation Permit: free, valid 12 months, required for all forestry estates.
  3. Landcruiser Mountain Park: $35 day pass / camping extra.
  4. National Parks: most are 2WD-only — confirm the road is gazetted for 4WD before entering.

FAQs

Where can I take a 4WD near Brisbane for free?

The HQPlantations forestry roads in the Glass House Mountains and D'Aguilar State Forest require only a free recreation permit. They're the cheapest legal 4WDing within an hour of Brisbane.

Do I need a lift kit to drive these tracks?

No. A stock dual-cab with all-terrain tyres and rated recovery points will handle every track on this list except the black runs at Landcruiser Mountain Park. A 2-inch lift and 32" tyres opens up another tier of confidence and clearance.

What's the closest 4WD beach to Brisbane?

Bribie Island, about an hour north. You need a Vehicle Access Permit from QPWS and tyres aired down to around 18 PSI for the soft sand sections.
